-Gabor Gallov Founder of Gabor Gallov Architects / Third Year Studio Tutor Nottingham Trent University
I have come to know Ben in my capacity as a third year studio tutor at Nottingham Trent University Faculty of Architecture, Design and the Built Environment.
Ben has a unique talent to balance his theoretical, phenomenological and technical aspirations and resolve these thoughts, with mature simultaneity into architectural compositions. His thought process is constantly straddling the line between the imagined and the real, the abstract and the tactile. He has an appreciation of the simple, ordinary, as well as the complex. His presentations are equally balanced. His drawings are finely composed and show interest towards the greatest scale as well as allowing his attention to affect the most minute level of detail. His graphic presentations are seductive yet clean and explicit. His verbal presentations are equally clear and show evidence of lucid thinking, purpose, preparation and focus. Ben has also produced more work and consistently so, than what was required which shows ambition, interest and most of all initiative. Ben is mature and has the capacity to galvanize any group he finds himself in. He is a team player who is very focused, productive, ambitious, yet he does not let this factor override his friendly social character which puts everyone around him at ease. This is a quality which is, an indispensable value regarding involvement in a modern architectural practice.
I would not hesitate in recommending Ben to any office or studio which is concerned with producing architecture of the highest level.
-Neil Perry Architect and CEO of Anderson Orr Architects Ltd
I write in reference to the above candidate who has undertaken his Part 1 placement with us since July 2021.
Ben is a friendly, hardworking and diligent individual, who has a warm disposition and is utterly professional in all matters of conduct.
He had excellent attendance and timekeeping.
Whilst with the practice he has undertaken work across a variety of project stages from feasibility, planning and working drawing stages, always showing the same level of enthusiasm, attention to detail, and high quality output.
I would not hesitate to recommend Ben to you, as a excellent architect in the making.
-Anthony Dalby Architect / Tutor at Nottingham Trent University
I have known Ben for two years in my capacity as a Senior Lecturer and studio tutor in Architecture in the School of Architecture, Design, and the Built Environment at Nottingham Trent University. I was also a studio tutor in his 2nd Year. In his final year I was module leader for Professional Practice and his personal tutor for Environment and Technology.
During the time that I have lectured and tutored Ben, I have seen his design skills develop further and his critical faculties become further honed to underpin his architectural design. His ideas are original, inventive and supported by significant research.
He produced competent work in the 3rd year Environment and Technology module. He developed good strategic thinking in his final project, with excellent work on precedents and environmental strategies, but needs to develop further his communication of the spatial relationships in his designs, and his attention to technical information and detailing
During the third year of his BArch degree, Ben demonstrated excellent organisation and management skills in his academic work. He was fully engaged in the professional practice module and produced excellent content for both pieces of coursework. Ben has both the academic and personal skills to engage and perform well on any Part II Architecture Course. Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
-Ian C.Maclean Group Commissioner / Troop Leader 49th Winnipeg Scout Troop
Ben Smallwood was a member of the 49th Winnipeg Scout Troop for two years. During this time Ben showed a very high degree of compassion for others and humour in the face of various difficulties. He is self directive and was an excellent leader within the Troop while also being very willing to be part of the team in accomplishing goals. I have no doubt that Ben, with his intelligence and problem solving skills, would make an excellent addition to any project or position.
-Annie Duquemin BA BArch Tutor Nottingham Trent University
I taught Ben in first and second year at Nottingham Trent. Specifically I taught him Communication and Tech studies and in Design studio. Ben is a hard worker, always attending tutorials and lectures and bringing work he has done to be reviewed and discussed. He is part of a cohort of students who “lead” the year group, working hard, competing with other and immersing themselves in the activities of the department, both academically and socially. Although I no longer teach him, I am sure he would be a valuable asset to an office at the Part 1 stage of his architectural career.
-Doug Tompkins General Builder & Hard Landscaper, Founder of Blackvale
I’m writing this reference in support of and with great enthusiasm for Ben Smallwood. I worked alongside Ben as the main contractor on a landscaping project for which he designed and tendered. Ben provided the specification and was the main point of contact for the project as it was executed. He also helped with the project start-up and marking out of the site to ensure the design was executed as he expected. I found Ben to be a person who was good to work with, responsive, innovative and willing to find solutions to challenges as they arose. Ben had a good understanding of the physical construction methods and requirements which ensured the design translated well into a physical and practical structure. I thoroughly enjoyed my time working with Ben and came to know him as a truly valuable asset to any team.
